"The Wiz" Field Trip

5/9/2014

Last month our students had the opportunity to see a musical production, "The Wiz", performed by the Jones High School Chorus, directed by Andrea Green.  Since many of our students have a high musical intelligence, this was a perfect opportunity to enhance and connect with the way they learn best.
Picture
The performance was simply amazing!  Our students laughed, sang, danced, and were fully engaged.  They were able to identify with the characters and the music.  This experience sparked numerous, meaningful conversations.  The icing on the cake was getting to meet the performers on stage!

Our goal is to enrich our students and give them exposure to educational experiences in not just academia, but the arts and other intelligence areas they possess.  We want our students to have educational encounters that last a life time.

It's all about connections..... "Learning Connections, Grounded in Success!

Leu Gardens Field Trip

Our students went to visit the beautiful Leu Gardens this spring to celebrate their unit on plants and insects! Leu Gardens is a great place to visit this time of year. Students were delighted by the many habitats they were able to observe. From the butterfly habitat, where we released our butterflies; to the lake, where we observed fish and a family of turtles... Leu Gardens offered many opportunities for children to observe what they learned in the classroom to making new discoveries and asking more questions.

The students were also able to "travel back in time" while touring the home of the Leu Garden founders. The gardens and historical home were donated to the City of Orlando in 1961 by Mr. Harry P. Leu and his wife, Mary Jane.

Should you get a chance to visit Leu Gardens, be sure to bring a camera, though the pictures will not do it justice.

Check out our butterfly release below!

The butterflies we released are called Painted Lady Butterflies. They look very similar to Monarch butterflies. We ordered our butterflies from Insectlore and received 5 larvae. We watched them grow through each stage, in our classroom, for about three weeks before they changed in the adult butterflies.

Resurrection Day Kids Craft

Students spent the week learning about and celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Here is one of the cute crafts we created with the students. It was very easy to make and doesn’t require many materials. Directions are provided below if you would like to make your own.

Happy Resurrection Day!

Picture

Materials Needed:

2Foam Paper Plates
1 Foam Cup
Crayons/Markers
Scissors
Tape

Cut the edge from one of the plates.

Next, use the cup to trace a circle onto the plate you cut the edge from. (For younger students, have them trace the cup onto the second plate as it will be easier for them to cut out.)

*Both ways are pictured to the right.*

Students color their cave and the circle that will represent the tomb stone.

Then add the words "Jesus Is Alive"

to the top of the plate.

Tape the circle, tombstone, onto the side.

Insert the cup (cave) into the circle cutout.

All About Plants - March Theme

During our study of plants, students were able to engage in the process of growing their very own Lima Bean.  We were able to actively participate in the scientific process of making hypotheses, doing research and making observations. We documented our observations in our observation logs which helped us to make inferences and draw conclusions about our plants.
Each student then did additional research on another plant of their choice, organized their findings and prepared their presentation based on a rubric provided. The students were able to give an oral presentation during class to display their research.  They were able to apply the process and be active participants which created memories with the learning.  When learning can be tied to a memory, knowledge learned moves from short to long term memory which has lasting effects.

Engage Students with Meaningful Centers

During the school day, there are many skills being introduced or taught.  In order for students to grasp concepts, the presentation and instruction must first be engaging.  The next critical step to increase retention of newly acquired knowledge is PRACTICE!  This is why centers MUST be meaningful.  It promotes engagement and practice with the skills presented.

When quality centers are utilized, students have the opportunity to manipulate and review skills both independently and cooperatively.  This also allows the teacher to differentiate practice depending upon the students individual levels and learning needs.  Quality centers allow the learning to be extended beyond the whole group instruction and provide time for small group interaction and instruction with the teacher.

Deeper Root Academy students utilize technology, hands on activities, cooperative learning skills and more to enhance what they learn in the classroom on a daily basis.

We Worship

2/12/2014

At Deeper Root Academy students and faculty meet weekly during chapel to praise God and give Him the glory!  Nurturing a strong relationship with the Lord fosters strong character.

At chapel students and faculty learn about His goodness, biblical principals, and how to apply it in their own lives. Our goal is that each student will exude a positive spirit in such a way that people will see Jesus in them.

During worship we lift our voices, our music, and our hearts as Jesus is a way of life and we pray daily to be filled with the Holy Spirit!

PLEDGE TO THE BIBLE

I pledge allegiance to the Bible, God’s Holy Word. I will make it a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path. I will hide its words in my heart. That I might not sin against God.

Deeper Root Academy and Multiple Intelligences

8/1/2013

The vision of Deeper Root Academy is to provide business and educational excellence by serving our clients and community with compassion, commitment, and character.  The educational focus is based on the study of Howard Gardner’s theory of Multiple Intelligence.
At the core of  this theory is the recognition that people think and learn differently and that intelligence can be expressed in a multitude of ways. This approach differs from the traditional education provided in public, and private schools in Florida.  Using the Common Core State Standards and Nationwide benchmarks,  our teaching will incorporate each of the seven major intellectual domains defined by Dr. Gardner and provide opportunities for each student to use his or her unique intelligence to understand the subject matter.

In addition, we will help students understand their strengths and challenges using Multiple Intelligence as a tool.  Students will learn to use strengths to acquire new information and work on more fully developing their knowledge in areas that are a challenge for them.  Our Christian values and character education will also foster the sound qualities that should be at the core of humanity.  We seek to rule out any chance of failure and teach our students to embrace their God-given abilities and talents in order to develop their understanding of how they can positively impact our world.  This opportunity will be extended to those who qualify for scholarship based on academic or developmental needs as well as provide scholarship opportunity for those who may not otherwise be able to afford to receive this type of quality education through School Choice Options offered in Florida through the Department of Education.
